Traditional specifications for heights of Parking Bay WheelStops for HGV Artic Trailers is typically 150mm high.
We have seen across the UK a lowering of trailer mudguards, bodywork skirtings and suspension gear heights above road/service yard slab level. This has promoted the higher risk of the trailer equipment clashing with vehicle WheelStops.
We also see Shunter practices (tipping trailer up to clear lowered landing legs causing the same clash issues. This will typically manifest in the following operation issues and damage to vehicle trailer equipment;
Consideration must be given to the reversing speeds of articulated trailers. Feedback from our customers indicates that there have been no issues with ride-over when transitioning to the lower WheelStop specification over a three-year period. Regarding the ‘Security of fix’ to the substrates, the entire range of recycled rubber WheelStops is exceptionally durable. The design incorporates a cushioning effect between the rubber tire and the rubber WheelStop, which alleviates stress on the fixings, unlike steel WheelStops. In terms of their ability to endure the substantial weight associated with trailer parking activities common in warehouse and logistics environments, testing conducted over the past four years has shown that these WheelStops can accommodate trailers and tractor units weighing up to 44 tonnes, with frequent daily movements, without any reported failures of the WheelStops or their fixings. This assessment excludes issues related to vehicle equipment colliding with WheelStops, which are specific incidents that have necessitated re-education of the HGV client base regarding the appropriate ‘NEXT GENERATION’ WheelStop height specifications outlined in this document. The only instances of WheelStop failures in the last three years have occurred exclusively in forklift loading environments, where there is a significant risk of forklifts dislodging the WheelStops from their fixings. If management practices are effective in these areas and forklift operators are diligent in avoiding collisions, the product can be safely utilized for this application. However, in high-risk situations, we can offer a suitable alternative solution specifically for these environments.
