Our Timber Bollards are made to order as they are a natural product and are generally supplied in 2–3 weeks from order, please be patient as these are not an off the shelf product. With Oak being a natural product you may experience some cracking or splitting of the timber, this is quite normal.
Oak wood contains tannins, which are natural compounds that can react with water and air to produce a dark colour on the wood surface. This is commonly known as “tannin bleed” or “tannin staining”.
When oak bollards are sawn and exposed to moisture, the tannins present in the wood are released and can seep to the surface, causing a dark discolouration.
While tannin staining can be unsightly, it is a natural occurrence and typically does not affect the structural integrity of the wood.
There are several methods to remove tannin staining from oak bollards:
-Sanding: Sanding the surface of the bollards with fine-grit sandpaper can remove the stained layer of wood and reveal a fresh surface. This method is effective for light staining, but it may not be effective for deep staining or dark marks.
-Bleaching: Oxalic acid can be used to bleach the surface of oak bollards and remove tannin stains. Mix the oxalic acid with water according to the manufacturer’s instructions, apply the solution to the surface of the bollards, and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Then rinse the surface with water and let it dry completely.
-Pressure washing: High-pressure water can be used to remove tannin staining from oak bollards. This method is effective for light to moderate staining, but it may not be suitable for all types of wood or finishes.
-Chemical cleaners: There are various chemical cleaners available that can remove tannin staining from oak bollards. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and use appropriate safety precautions.
** Please note, these Oak Timber Bollards are hand made to order, finished and planed by hand. The images on the website are only a representative of the finished article. Because they are hand made finishes will vary from order to order. A premium European Oak is used but Oak is not always going to be a perfect finish so some cracking, splitting and variation on finishes is to be expected.
(Our Oak bollards are fresh sawn, not air dried. The moisture content can be up to 40%.)
